Alice Urbach, a Jewish girl from Vienna, loved cooking as a child. She had an unhappy marriage, in which her husband was a drunkard, a gambler, and lost all her dowry. After her husband's death, Alice relied on her cooking skills to support the family independently, and struggled to establish a career, running a cooking school and publishing best-selling recipes. Under Nazi rule, she lost her home and career and fled to England, where she worked as a maid for a wealthy woman in a castle and later in a "children's home" to care for Jewish girls who had been left homeless by the war. Her younger son was imprisoned in Dachau concentration camp. The eldest son went into exile in Shanghai and later immigrated to the United States, where he became an intelligence officer and fought against the Nazis. After the war, Alice moved to New York to start a new life. When she returned to Vienna, she found her best-selling recipe still on sale, but with a strange man's name on the cover. Did the man who described himself in his book as a "master cook" really exist? Who the hell is he? Can Alice have her book back?
To research her grandmother's "stolen" recipe, Karina Urbach, Alice's granddaughter, traveled to archives in Vienna, London and Washington, unearth letters, tapes and video files long thought to be lost.
