卡洛·M.奇波拉（Carlo M.Cipolla，1922-2000）,意大利著名经济史学家，加州大学伯克利分校经济史学教授，美国艺术与科学院、美国哲学学会、意大利猞猁之眼国家科学院、英国皇家历史学会、欧洲科学院成员。主编《欧洲经济史》，著有《工业革命前的欧洲社会与经济》《人类愚蠢基本定律》《地中海世界的货币、价格与文明》等。

【 Content Introduction 】
This book is the famous Italian economic historian Carlo M. Cipola published for the public history, with a sophisticated narrative, from the currency, price and other aspects of the Mediterranean trade civilization of the 5th to 17th century. He begins by outlining the history of primitive money around the Mediterranean in the early Middle Ages, when payments in kind prevailed and other commodities, like money, were a means of exchange. Later, economic and trade growth led to international currency (Nomisma in Byzantium, dinar in Arabia, Florin in Florence, Ducato in Venice, etc.) and "small money" for everyday transactions. He also mentioned "ghost money" such as pennies, which are used for bookkeeping operations but have no physical equivalent. Finally, he uses historical cases involving the cost of goods, books, transportation, and loans to assess the relative value of prices and to analyze the social conditions of the Mediterranean world at the time. Cipolla's analysis of how to measure the development of civilization through important economic elements is a good example.

Carlo M.Cipolla (1922-2000) was an Italian economic historian, Professor of economic history at the University of California, Berkeley, and member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, the Italian National Academy of Lynx Eyes, the Royal Historical Society, and the European Academy of Sciences. Editor of Economic History of Europe and author of European Society and Economy Before the Industrial Revolution, Basic Laws of Human Stupidity, Money, Prices, and Civilization in the Mediterranean World.
