本书以1917年张勋复辟前后的中国社会为主要关注点，以严谨的态度，探讨了此一时期政坛的现状，包括是否对德宣战，如何受到国际社会的影响，张勋复辟前后军人集团、文人集团的反应等等史事，读来既有趣味性又兼具学术性。在此基础上，张鸣老师在行文中提出这样一个问题：我们如何在制度不健全的条件下，推进社会的进步？执政者在面对不完善的游戏规则时，尽力弥补制度的漏洞还是采取厚黑的手段，哪一种更能实现其执政理念？
作者简介
张鸣，浙江上虞人，长于北大荒。出生赶上鸣放，故曰：鸣。窦文涛评道：一出生就是右派。年幼时最大的理想是做图书管理员，好每天有书看。及长，幻想当作家，变成文学青年。一辈子养过猪，做过兽医，大学学的是农业机械，最后误打误撞，成了大学教历史的老师，众人眼中的学者。一生坎坷无数，碰壁无数，头撞南墙不回头，不是墙破，就是我亡。由幼及长，从黑板报算起，写过的文字无数，黑板报都擦了，小说都烧了，所谓的学术文字和随笔评论，留下来的比较多，有些变成铅字，好像有十几本了，均遗憾多多。年过五十，没有长进，再活五十年也许能好些。

About the author
