This blockbuster historical expose of the diamond industry reveals an ancient, bloodstained, sweaty, and competitive side of the diamond beneath its glittering exterior. It focuses on the exploitation of miners and the environment by diamond mining, the means by which empires, governments, and private companies monopolize the trade in uncut diamonds, and how elites profit from the labor of the poor and the doomed dreams of the poor.
How industrialists from the sultans of India and the Portuguese of Brazil to South Africa used forced labor and political oppression to hoard diamonds to maintain high prices; British imperialism realized racial oppression and imperialist grotesque fantasy through diamond trade monopoly and expanded colonial rule; How De Beers, the world's largest diamond miner, set the tone for the diamond industry and, through its diamonds, participated in some of the darkest moments of 20th century history. And how the morally condemned "blood diamond" was born.
And with the passage of time, even today, this situation has not changed. The book shows that advances in synthetic diamond production have not yet been able to eliminate the mining caused by the world's unquenchable thirst for diamonds.
