  作者简介

  凯瑞·布朗(Kerry Brown),伦敦国王学院中国学教授,刘氏中国研究院院长。1967年生于英国肯特郡,拥有剑桥大学文学硕士学位,伦敦泰晤士河谷大学汉语普通话研究生文凭(优等)以及利兹大学中国政治和汉语专业博士学位。英国著名且非常活跃的中国研究领域的教授,担任英国皇家国际事务研究所亚太项目高级研究员、澳大利亚和新西兰政府学院客座教授、德国全球事务研究所《当代中国事务杂志》(Journal of Current Chinese Affairs)联合主编,以及肯特考古学会候任会长。2012~2015年,担任悉尼大学中国政治学教授和中国研究中心主任,并主持“欧洲-中国研究与咨询网络”(ECRAN)工作;2006~2012年,任英国皇家国际事务研究所高级研究员、亚洲项目负责人;1998~2005年,供职于英国外交和联邦事务部任英国驻华大使馆一等秘书,后担任印度尼西亚、菲律宾和东帝汶科科长;1994~1996年,旅居中国内蒙古地区。著有二十多部关于当代中国的作品,涵盖中国历史、政治、文化、城市等多个领城。近年著作包括:《五城记》《中英关系的未来》《中国梦:中共文化和权力的来源》《中国的世界:中国想要什么》。

  邓澄儿,伦敦国王学院博士研究生,研究方向为中国外交和传播,拥有政府和治理专业硕士学位。曾担任新华社国际新闻主播、新华社手机电视台国际合作部主管。

  全球化智库(CCG),由王辉耀博士和苗绿博士于2008年在北京创办。2018年,全球化智库成为首家获得联合国特别咨商地位的中国智库。在美国宾夕法尼亚大学2020年度的《全球智库报告》中,跻身全球顶级智库百强榜单,名列第64位。据中国工程院与浙江大学研究机构联合发布的2021年度《全球智库影响力评价报告》,全球化智库在全球智库TOP100榜单中名列第26位,在中国智库TOP100榜单中名列第7位,连续两年位列中国社会智库第1位。



Content introduction

This eclectic collection aims to tell the story of European knowledge and understanding of China over the past eight hundred years.

The editor creatively selected the views and opinions of 16 representative figures of great influence in the West on China in history. They include Marco Polo, Samuel Purchase, Matteo Ricci, Leibniz, Voltaire, Montesquieu, John Barlow, Hegel, Marx, Guberza, Max Weber, Russell, Carl Jung, Beauvoir, Julia Kristeva, Roland Barthe, etc. His identity includes businessmen, travelers, missionaries, diplomats, thinkers, philosophers, writers, etc. His works cover the initial contact between Europeans and China, the cognition of China in the age of European Enlightenment, the view of China in modern times, and the personal experience of China in the 1970s.

Based on the contemporary era, the book guides the reader to re-examine modern China as well as historical China, and helps the reader to understand the historical origins of the relationship between Europe and China.

About the author

Kerry Brown is Professor of Chinese studies and director of the Liu China Institute at King's College London. Born in Kent in 1967, he holds a Master of Arts degree from Cambridge University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Mandarin Chinese (cum laude) from Thames Valley University in London and a PhD in Chinese Politics and Chinese Language from the University of Leeds. A well-known and very active professor in the field of China studies in the UK, he is a senior Fellow in the Asia Pacific Program at Chatham House, Visiting Professor at the Australian and New Zealand School of Government, and co-editor of the Journal of Current Chinese Affairs at the German Institute for Global Affairs. And president-elect of the Kent Archaeological Society. From 2012 to 2015, he was Professor of Chinese Politics and Director of the Centre for Chinese Studies at the University of Sydney, where he chaired the Europe-China Research and Advisory Network (ECRAN). From 2006 to 2012, he was Senior Fellow and Head of the Asia Programme at Chatham House. From 1998 to 2005, he served in the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office as First Secretary at the British Embassy in China and then as Head of the Indonesia, Philippines and Timor-Leste Section. From 1994 to 1996, he lived in Inner Mongolia, China. He is the author of more than 20 works on contemporary China, covering Chinese history, politics, culture, cities and other areas. His recent books include A Tale of Five Cities, The Future of Sino-British Relations, The Chinese Dream: The Source of Chinese Culture and Power, and China's World: What China Wants.

Cheng 'er Deng is a PhD candidate at King's College London with a research focus on Chinese diplomacy and communication and holds a master's degree in Government and governance. He was the international news anchor of Xinhua News Agency and the director of the international cooperation Department of Xinhua News Agency Mobile TV Station.

The CCG was founded in Beijing in 2008 by Dr. Wang Huiyao and Dr. Miao Lu. In 2018, the Globalization Think Tank became the first Chinese think tank to receive Special consultative status with the United Nations. In the 2020 "Global Think Tank Report" of the University of Pennsylvania, it ranks 64th on the list of the top 100 global think tanks. According to the 2021 Global Think Tank Impact Evaluation Report jointly released by the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the research institute of Zhejiang University, global think tanks ranked 26th in the global think tank TOP100 list, 7th in the Chinese think tank TOP100 list, and ranked 1st in China's social think tanks for two consecutive years.
