Introduction of works
The Weimar Republic was an important period in modern German history, born in the shadow of the defeat of the First World War, and its founders sought to carve out a new path for the German nation from the old world order. The German Revolution created Germany's first democratic constitution, but failed to infuse the country with a democratic spirit. Elite nostalgia for the past, political parties' compromises, a major economic setback, and growing populism made the young country unsustainable - paving the way for the rise of the Nazis and the fall of the Republic. "The Rise and Fall of the Weimar Republic: 1918-1933" tells the history of Germany's internal political forces struggling to survive in the face of internal troubles and foreign attacks from 1918 to 1933.
Hans Monsen (1930-2015) was one of the most important historians of post-World War II Germany, focusing on modern and contemporary German and European history. He has taught at the Institute of Contemporary History in Munich, Heidelberg University, Ruhr University, and has been a visiting professor at Princeton University, Harvard University, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Jerusalem. Member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences, European Academy of Sciences, corresponding member of the British National Academy of Sciences, Austrian Academy of Sciences. His major works include The Rise and Fall of the Weimar Republic, History of Germany in the 20th Century and the Myth of Modernity.
