The World of Late Antiquity is a remarkable study of social and cultural change, explaining how and why the late ancient world, from about the 3rd century to 750 AD, differed from "classical civilization." As the author demonstrates, these centuries were a time when entrenched ancient institutions disappeared forever: in 476, the Roman Empire disappeared from Western Europe; In 655, the Persian Empire disappeared from the Near East. Peter Brown, a professor of history at Princeton University, studies the upheavals of this period and how people reacted to them. In his treatise, this period is also a striking new beginning, defining the profound influence of Christianity on Europe and Islam on the Near East. The answer to a key question in world history has emerged: how the remarkably homogeneous Mediterranean world around 200 AD divided into three estranged societies: medieval Catholic Western Europe, Orthodox Byzantium, and the Islamic East. At this point, changes that took place in late antiquity are still affecting our world today.

Peter Brown is professor emeritus of history at Princeton University. He graduated from Oxford University and has taught at the University of London and the University of California, Berkeley. He has made outstanding contributions to the study of late antiquity. His writings are particularly concerned with religious culture and the relationship between religion and society in late Roman and early Medieval Europe, including Augustine of Hippo, The World in Late Antiquity, Hagiolatry, The Body and Society, The Rise of Western Christianity, and Poverty and Leadership in the Late Roman Empire.
