哈佛大学历史系乌克兰史米哈伊洛·赫鲁舍夫斯基讲席教授、哈佛大学乌克兰研究中心主任，专攻东欧思想、文化、国际关系史，著有《大国的崩溃：苏联解体的台前幕后》《欧洲之门：乌克兰2000年史》《切尔诺贝利：一部悲剧史》等十余部专著，获奖众多，包括非虚构类两大标杆奖项莱昂内尔·盖尔伯奖与贝利·吉福德奖，以及俄罗斯研究领域的权威奖项普希金图书奖，他也是唯一两获普希金图书奖的获奖者。
