After Auschwitz

The word "Treatise" is translated from "Essay", which means "with the shape of essay, with the reality of essay". It is a kind of descriptive style that Adorno especially praises and personally practices. A selection of 22 essays by Adorno attempts to present the thinker's thoughts on society, culture and literature. Because "Auschwitz" is the core of Adorno's trauma and "After Auschwitz" is an important philosophical proposition covering his whole thought discourse, this translation takes "After Auschwitz" as the main title.

The book is divided into three volumes, selected mainly for their importance and representation in Adorno's thought. The first volume, titled "After Auschwitz: Writing Poetry Barbaric or Not," reflects Adorno's general thoughts on culture and society; The second volume, titled "Art: Oscillating between Seriousness and Joy," presents Adorno's key discourse on literature and art; The third volume, titled "The Culture Industry: The overall Effect is Counter-Enlightenment," features important essays by Adorno on popular culture.

The book is preceded by the translator's introduction and followed by three appendictions, including one translation (the author of the translation, Lowenthal, is a member of the Frankfurt School and knows Adorno well), and two interviews (the interviewin, Samuel Weber, translated Prism, is the first person in the world to translate Adorno into English; Martin Jay is the author of The Dialectical Imagination, the first history of the Frankfurt School in the world) - they all contribute to the reader's understanding of Adorno.
