Coffin Boat 【 Content Introduction 】

In the 1840s and 1850s, a great famine broke out in Ireland, and millions of poor people had no food to eat, so they had to migrate across the sea to start a new life elsewhere. Accounts of Irish emigration during the Great Famine often consist of tired platitudes, half-truths and cold statistics.

In Coffin Boats, a groundbreaking transnational history, McMahon offers a vibrant new perspective on a crucial but often overlooked part of the migration process - the journey itself.

As hungry people head for the sea, they are confronted with a disappointing reality: there are not enough ships to sail far. And those who had taken the trouble to get on board had also put one foot in the coffin - darkness, dampness, and crowding were the main themes of the long journey, with hunger, dehydration, and vertigo all to mention amid the ravages of disease. So many people died on board and were thrown into the sea that migrant ships, also known as "coffin ships", became an infamous label for migrant voyages in the 19th century.

The book is divided into five parts: preparation, embarkation, life at sea, death, and arrival. Based on archives from three continents, the author recreates sea journeys from letters and diaries of migrants whose personal experiences provide a more sophisticated understanding of this crucial history. And there is no doubt that the safe arrival is only the first step. The Irish are just beginning a new life abroad, and the experience of life and death on board will bring them new and closer relationships.
