Learning to See with Epicurus
Later generations believed that the philosophy of Epicurus and his successors was primarily intended to make those who practiced it happy. However, this is a big misunderstanding. Everyone thinks they know Epicurus, reducing his ideas to the famous "live in the moment."
According to Epicurus, we live in the grip of fear, insatiable desire, and imagination. The consumer society demands that we always want more. We can't be satisfied with what we have and always put off the happy moment until tomorrow. When we look ahead to an elusive future, we also sow the seeds of fears that come back to us more quickly when we try to put them aside.
