作者简介
斯蒂芬·杰·古尔德（StephenJayGould，1941—2002），哈佛大学教授，著名进化论科学家、古生物学家、科学史学家和科学散文作家，享誉世界的反伪科学斗士，百科全书式的真正大师。他和奈尔斯·埃尔德雷奇于1972年共同提出点断平衡理论，对达尔文进化论进行了修正。美国麦克阿瑟奖首批获奖者之一，2008年被追授达尔文-华莱士奖章。

The Arrow of Time, the Ring of Time
This book explores the major contribution of geology to human thought - the discovery of "deep time" and its theoretical origins.
The history of the Earth is an ancient, vast history that we can only understand through metaphor. The book revolves around the dichotomy of the "arrow of time" (narrative history, directionality, and uniqueness) and the "ring of time" (inherent laws, cycles, and repetition), combined with iconographic interpretation, This paper re-examines and interprets the three pioneers of "deep time" thought in the field of western geology and their classic works - Thomas Burnett's "Divine Theory of the Earth", James Hutton's "Theory of the Earth" and Charles Lyell's "Principles of Geology", thus reconstructing the development of the history of the earth.
About the author
StephenJayGould (1941-2002) was a professor at Harvard University, a renowned evolutionary scientist, paleontologist, historian of science, and scientific essayist, a world-renowned crusader against pseudoscience, and a true master of the encyclopedia. In 1972, he and Niles Eldredge proposed the point break equilibrium theory, a modification of Darwinian evolution. One of the first MacArthur Fellows in the United States, he was posthumously awarded the Darwin-Wallace Medal in 2008.
