Introduction to the Black Iron Age
Living alone in South Africa, Mrs. Curran was diagnosed with cancer and entered the countdown to life.
She wrote to her daughter in the United States, telling her daughter about the life she was going through and everything in her heart, which was also like a mumble.
As a white intellectual woman protected by the regime, she witnessed the suffering of those around her because of apartheid, and was deeply powerless, angry, sad and humiliated in the face of her own near death and the death of others caused by the SINS of the system...
In the story to her daughter, she revealed another self, and unreservedly vented her questions, challenges and reflections on herself and this era.
One reader commented: "The Black Iron Age is an extremely dark book, even darker than Coetzee's other works. But there needs to be heavy darkness. How else can one cope with the impending death and severe degradation of one's fellow human beings?"
"I imagined, as I do now, Coetzee sitting on his bed in apartheid South Africa, trying to imagine what a white man could do, really could do, to help end the violent white supremacist regime." I think all the difficult, contradictory and often powerless ideas that he had in mind are incorporated into this book. Too many words cannot be written, too many scenes cannot be told. The story of our time; The age of decay and rebellion, of sin and redemption."
The Cape Town Tercentennial Foundation in South Africa awarded the 1995 prize to Coetzee "not limited to a single time or country." Take a close look at oppression, cruelty, and injustice, and teach the reader how to view freedom and the difficulties of trying to express it."
In this book, there is a "heavy" Coetzee present.
