After the two daughters follow their father to Toronto, the middle-aged divorced Leda goes to the beach alone, on the beach, she meets the young mother Nina and daughter Elena, Leda and the happy mother and daughter have a complex attachment. Leda deliberately takes the doll that Elena forgot on the beach, throwing Nina's life into complete chaos.
Fifteen years ago, an English woman named Bilanda appeared in Leda's hopeless life for a few hours and changed Leda's fate forever. Fifteen years later, twenty-two-year-old Nina also seems to choose Leda to help her escape, but Leda's eventual confession sends her into fear. On this beach, Leda really has to face the broken past of herself and her daughter.
Dark Daughter (2006) is Elena Ferrante's third feature-length novel, Maggie Gyllenhaal's film adaptation of the same name, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2021 and was nominated for three Academy Awards.
About the author
Helena Ferrante published her first novel, Annoying Love, in 1992, which was adapted into a film of the same name by Italian director Mario Martone in 1995. He has since published a novel, The Abandoned Days (2002), a collection of letters and interviews, Fragments (2003,2016), a novel, Daughter in the Dark (2006), and a children's novel, The Beach at Night (2007).
From 2011 to 2014, Ferrante published four plot-related novels called the Neapolitan Tetralogy, My Talented Girlfriend, The Story of a New Name, The Left, the Left, and The Missing Child at a rate of one per year.
In 2015, Ferrante was named "Woman of the Year" by the Financial Times. In 2016, Time magazine named Elena Ferrante one of its "100 Most Influential Artists." In March 2017, My Talented Girlfriend was adapted into a play in London. In 2017, HBO announced that the Neapolitan Tetralogy would be adapted into a television series.
The author's two most recent works are the novel Adult Life of Lies (2019) and the essay collection Margins and Dictation (2021).
