1943, Rome. Although World War II has broken out, Cesilla and her daughter Rosetta are unaware of the approaching war on Rome. But soon, as prices rise and food runs out, mother and daughter flee to the countryside to avoid starvation or being blown up by airplanes. Along the way, mother and daughter have seen people sell each other for small profits, and have witnessed the degeneration of kindness and integrity.
Fortunately, they survived the famine, escaped the war, and waited for the news of the end of the war; Unfortunately, it is on their way home that an even greater disaster awaits them not far away.

In the Italian literary circle, Moravia, Calvino and Xia Xia are collectively called "three masters of modern Italian literature" by critics. He is considered a great writer too late to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, and the Nobel Prize archives reveal that he has been nominated 15 times. One day in September 1943, Moravia was walking through Piazza Spagna in Rome when he ran into a journalist he knew. The friend said he had been added to a list of so-called "subversives." "Women Under Fire" is based on the experiences of the author and his wife, who fled the war in the Fondi region south of Rome from September 1943 to May 1944.
