In the summer of 1839, Thoreau and his brother paddled on the river for two weeks in a homemade boat. In 1842, his brother died of illness, to mourn the death of his brother, Thoreau wrote "a Week on the River." In this book, Thoreau reduced his two-week journey to one week, one chapter a day, describing his observations of flowers, birds, fish, mountains and rivers, as well as his reflections on religion, poetry, and history. In nature, Thoreau tried to get rid of the worldly troubles, beyond the boundaries of time, to find inner peace.
