Health insurance, student loan debt, retirement security, child care, access to homeownership are all issues driving the current political debate in the United States. They are linked by the same question: Should the free market determine people's lives?
Mike Conchal, a prominent US economic commentator, answers this question with a resounding no. A 2019 poll found that nearly half of young Americans would prefer to "live in a socialist country." Sixty-one percent of 18 - to 24-year-olds gave the word "socialism" a positive rating, compared with less than 29 percent of 55-year-olds.
Looking back in history, Conchal found that not just during the progressives or the New Deal, but as far back as the early days of the nation, Americans defined freedom to include freedom from the market. Conchal points out that many of the freedoms Americans cherish are beyond the reach of the market. In fact, some of the basic resources for human survival are precisely not fully marketable, such as land, labor and time. Civil movements such as Occupy Wall Street also show that the public has sharply criticized and reflected on the excessively market-oriented democratic society in the United States.
