斯科特·雷诺兹·尼尔森（Scott Reynolds Nelson）：乔治亚大学历史系教授，古根海姆奖研究员。已著有五本书。其中《钢铁之躯》（Steel Drivin’Man）获得了美国社会史摩尔·柯蒂奖（Merie Curti Prize for American Social History）和国家艺术创作奖（National Award for Arts Writing）。作者凭借《小麦战争》的写作计划获得了古根海姆奖学金。

To understand the rise and fall of empires, we must follow the grain trade routes along rivers, between ports, and across sea cities. Historian Scott Reynolds Nelson, in The Wheat War, shows how efforts to control these routes can change the balance of power among the world's great powers. In the early 19th century, the Russian Empire supplied food to much of Europe through the port of Odessa in Ukraine. But after the American Civil War, tons of American wheat began flooding into the Atlantic, and food prices plummeted. This cheap foreign food fueled the rise of Germany and Italy and the fall of the Habsburgs and Ottomans. This was one of the key factors in the outbreak of the First World War and the Russian Revolution. From 10,000 BC, the author tells the story of how grain remade world power, using historical archives to show how the British, French, Dutch, Belgian, Ukrainian and Russian empires thrived on the transport and supply of grain, and were challenged by cheap American wheat and global trade.
About the author
Scott Reynolds Nelson is a professor of history and a Guggenheim Fellow at the University of Georgia. He has written five books. "Steel Drivin 'Man" won the Merie Curti Prize for American Social History and the National Award for Arts Writing). The author was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for his writing project on The Wheat Wars.
