Content introduction

John Douglas, the legendary FBI criminal profilist, New York Times bestselling author, and author of Netflix's hit TV series, returns to four complex and mysterious cases in his new book, The Killer Who Sat across from Me, and reveals never-before-revealed details of his psychological portrait. And the exciting face-to-face psychological confrontation with the criminal suspect.

As the founder of the FBI Criminal Mind Portrait, John Douglas has studied and interviewed many of America's most notorious serial killers, including Charlie Manson, David "Son of Sam" Berkowitz, and Dennis Rader "BTK murderer," to delve into their criminal psychological motivations and behaviors. Twenty years after the publication of his best-selling autobiography Psych, Douglas focuses on four cases that he personally interviewed and researched over the course of his career.

The Killer Who Sat Across from Me is a book about the way violent criminals think. Studying the mind of violent criminals has been the cornerstone of Douglass's 25 years as an FBI agent, psychographer and criminal investigative analyst, and what he has done since retiring from the bureau.

The conversation is the source of everything, the beginning of the mental portrait, the beginning of everything that follows. All the knowledge the psychographers have gained, all the conclusions they have drawn, the catalogues they have created, the killers they have helped to catch and prosecute, all began by sitting across from the killers and asking them about their lives. The purpose of the inquiry is to understand what drove them to deprive another person or many people of their life. The four killers mentioned in the book are different, each with their own unique modus operandi, motives, and psychological makeup. Some of their victims were just one, while others were as many as 100. The contrast between them is intriguing and striking. Through a series of such interviews, Douglas and his colleagues eventually developed a rigorous analysis that linked the crime to what the offender was really thinking at the time of the crime, and thus answered the age-old question: "What kind of person would do something like this?"
