作者简介
安德鲁·阿伯特（Andrew Abbott，1948—），芝加哥大学社会学教授，美国艺术与科学院院士。1982年获芝加哥大学社会学博士，后任教于罗格斯大学，1991年返回芝加哥大学社会学系执教。1993—1996年，任芝加哥大学学院社会科学部长。1999—2002年，任芝加哥大学社会学系主任。2000—2016年，任《美国社会学期刊》主编。他的研究主要集中于职业社会学、知识社会学和社会理论。主要著作包括《职业系统》（1988）、《学系与学科》（1999）、《学科的混沌》（2001）、《时间之重》（2001）、《发现方法》（2004）、《过程社会学》（2016）等。

While the research literature has long been troubled by these questions, this book examines in detail the Chicago School, its intellectual legacy, and its dynamic relationship with the larger discipline.
Embedded in the analysis of the school and its practice is a broader theoretical argument that Abbott uses to redefine the social object as a series of interconnected events rather than fixed entities. Abbott's theory stems directly from the Chicago School's insistence on placing social life in time and place, a tradition that has been at the heart of the school for centuries.
About the author
Andrew Abbott (1948 -) is a professor of sociology at the University of Chicago and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He received his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago in 1982 and later taught at Rutgers University before returning to the Department of Sociology in 1991. From 1993 to 1996, he was the Director of Social Sciences at the University of Chicago College. He was Chairman of the Department of Sociology at the University of Chicago from 1999 to 2002. From 2000 to 2016, he was editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Sociology. His research focuses on occupational sociology, sociology of knowledge, and social theory. His major books include Occupational Systems (1988), Departments and Disciplines (1999), The Chaos of Disciplines (2001), The Weight of Time (2001), Methods of Discovery (2004), and Process Sociology (2016).
Xing Cosmos is an associate professor and head of the Department of Social Work at the Faculty of Grammar and Law, Beijing University of Technology. Her research interests include social organization and social governance.
