As a Palestinian Arab-American intellectual, literary critic, and social activist, Edward Said was one of the most groundbreaking thinkers of the second half of the twentieth century. His famous work "Orientalism" has far-reaching influence, and is still a must-read for the comparative study of Eastern and Western cultures in every academic field and public sphere.
Born in Jerusalem in 1935, Said spent his teenage years in Cairo, went to high school in the United States before he was 16, attended Princeton University, received a doctorate in literature from Harvard, and taught at Columbia University. As an important public intellectual, both published in academic journals and debated on television shows, his writing and speaking changed the face of universities, opened up new fields of study, gave writers and scholars from the fringes access to the metropolis, and forever changed the wind of public opinion on the rights of the Palestinian people.
Over the course of eight years, Timothy Brennan has trawled through an extensive archive of unpublished articles, drafts of novels, personal letters, and interviews with family, friends, students, and even opponents. He tracks the evolution of Said's thought, reproduces the origin and influence of each of Said's writings, and writes the only comprehensive biography of Said so far.

Timothy Brennan (1953-) is an American author, cultural theorist, and professor of comparative literature at the University of Minnesota's College of Humanities. He is the author of The World as Home: Cosmopolitanism Today, Borrowed Light: Vico, Hegel, and the Colonies, Salman Rushdie and the Third World: Myths about Peoples. Articles have appeared in The Nation, The Times Literary Supplement, The London Review of Books, and many other publications.
