　　詹姆斯·乔伊斯(JamesJoyce，1882—1941)1882年2月2日，乔伊斯出生在爱尔兰首都都柏林市。他在少年时代就显露出杰出的文学才能。

　　在乔伊斯成长起来的19世纪末20世纪初，都柏林仍处在英国的殖民统治之下，是艰难谋求独立之路的“瘫痪”之都：社会政治和文化氛围压抑，普通市民大多麻木保守、得过且过。乔伊斯有感于这种病态麻木的社会氛围，用写实的手法，按照童年、少年、成年和步入社会生活的人生进程，将他所熟悉的都柏林写进15篇小说，并将这个系列命名为《都柏林人》，从而在世界文学地图上增添了都柏林这个城市。美国诗人庞德曾盛赞：“乔伊斯写的不仅仅是都柏林，而是所有的城市。”

About the author

JamesJoyce (1882-1941) was born on February 2, 1882, in Dublin, Ireland. He showed great literary talent even in his youth.

When Joyce grew up in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Dublin was still under British colonial rule, a "paralyzed" city struggling to achieve independence: the socio-political and cultural atmosphere was repressed, and ordinary citizens were mostly numb and conservative. Feeling this sick and numb social atmosphere, Joyce used realistic techniques to write the Dublin he was familiar with into 15 novels according to the life process of childhood, adolescence, adulthood and entering social life, and named this series Dubliners, thus adding Dublin to the world literary map. The American poet Ezra Pound once remarked, "Joyce wrote not only of Dublin, but of all cities."

Dubliners is the only collection of short stories in Joyce's lifetime, and it is also an excellent entrance into the world of Joyce's literature. It contains a series of crucial themes that Joyce tries to present, such as the numb spirit, the stranded life, the frustrated growth, the disoriented soul, and the mediocre modern world. His masterpieces include Ulysses, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Finnegan's Wake.
