1972, Munich Olympics. At an international sporting event that promotes mutual understanding, lasting friendship and solidarity, 11 innocent members of the Israeli Olympic team were brutally murdered by the Palestinian terrorist organization Black September, in front of an enthusiastic audience around the world. This sensational tragic event is known as the "Munich Tragedy".
After the tragedy, the whole country of Israel was immersed in great grief and anger. In secret, Golda Meir, then the female prime minister of Israel, was determined to make the terrorist organization "Black September" pay for the massacre. For this reason, the Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency, provided a hit list of 11 terrorist leaders. In this way, a secret revenge operation that lasted many years, cost a lot of money and spread across Europe began and ended in silence. Later, when the media revealed these secret assassinations one by one, they were collectively referred to as Operation Damnation for the convenience of reporting.
Five ordinary Israelis are selected by the Mossad to form an operation team tasked with eliminating Palestinian terrorist leaders, vowing to avenge the deaths of 11 Israelis at the hands of terrorists during the 1972 Munich Olympics. Avner (a pseudonym), who was the leader of the five-person action team, has now left the "Mossad" and lives in the United States with his wife and daughter.
The book, written by author George Jonas and based on Avner's own oral account, is a true account of the little-known details of the revenge operation. Some of those involved have been named under pseudonyms to avoid revealing their identities.
About the author
George Jonas (1935 -) was born to a Jewish intellectual family in Budapest, Hungary, and emigrated to Canada in 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution. As an author and journalist, he has published three global bestsellers in the non-fiction genre, won the Allan POE Award for Best Crime Record and the Canadian Writer's Award, and critics have called him "one of Canada's best English-language writers" and "one of Canada's best writers."
