This "History" is a jigsaw puzzle scattered everywhere. In this puzzle, time is disorganized, narrating the day, the narrator's own childhood, the mother's years of purges, the French overseas colonization, the Spanish Civil War... The location is scattered, the family's old house, the cousin's villa, the postcard colony, the travel destination, the loan bank, the street cafe... The characters are interspersed: parents, grandmothers, wives, Cousins, childhood friends, bank clerks, antique buyers, mother's suitors... The feeling is mixed, light, color, sound, breath, touch... It is up to the reader to piece together the story of a single day in this jigsaw puzzle, which covers three generations of history.
The original book was published in 1967 and won the French Medici Prize in the same year. The prize is intended to reward the work of writers who have just entered the literary world and have not yet gained recognition commensurate with their talent.

Yu Xinyue is currently an associate professor at the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Cultures in France. She received her bachelor's degree in French and English bilingualism from Soochow University, and her master's degree in Teaching French as a foreign language and her doctorate degree in linguistics from Universite Paris 7, France.
Tang Shuwen is a graduate student in French Language and Literature at Nanjing University. She is the author of Travel, On Other Planets (co-translated), A History of the World (co-translated, to be published), and Where Are We: A Sketch of Human History (to be published).
