Content introduction
The book describes the dramatic changes in technology and culture between 1880 and World War I that enabled new modes of understanding and experiencing time and space. The book deals with Proust, Joyce, H.G. Wells, Freud, Conrad, Einstein, and Picasso, as well as the various sources of popular culture and the shift in traditional values.
