Content introduction

This book takes the impact and impact of the epidemic on cities as the theme, and redefines the development direction of cities in the future by analyzing the various crises facing cities today. The authors, one urban planning expert Edward Glaeser of the University of Chicago and a professor of economics at Harvard, and the other a public health expert David Cutler of applied economics at Harvard, speak in their respective fields and elaborate on how cities are both an easily transmitted virus. The cradle of the devil, which produces all kinds of crime, is also the indispensable engine of human creativity, wealth, and civilization itself.

When the epidemic came, the city became silent, and offline social interaction was forced to stop. People choose to promote their work and life through online office or remote communication, and more and more young people are also choosing to escape the shackles of the city. The authors argue that the wave of urban failure will be catastrophic and that urban life is facing great challenges. Cities offer unique intimacy and inspiration, but great cities require wise managers and a sound regulatory system. The current crisis has exposed terrible flaws in the governance of cities. What is the future of development? Are we heading for a post-urban era?

This lively book not only helps us understand the history of urban development, but also proposes many feasible policies, which can be called a textbook of urban planning. The authors also expose a wide range of inequalities in health care and education in the United States. Through reading this book, we can objectively and comprehensively understand the current problems facing the city we rely on for survival, and grasp the change and innovation of urban life in the future.
