　　本书是著名汉学家拉铁摩尔夫妇基于多年在中国的生活以及学术研究经历写出的作品，是一部独具特色的简明中国历史著作。本书通过“国土与人民”、“现存最古老的文明”、“近代中国”、“近代世界中的中国”四编十二章，详今略古地叙述了自夏商周到20世纪40年代的中国历史，尤其破除古代史学中“华夷”之分的陈见，站在“长城内外皆故乡”的角度，重新诠释中国历朝兴衰的规律，并且分析了近代以来中国的新变化、新气象，揭露了日本对中国的侵略、西方国家对日本侵略的纵容，展望了中国在世界的重要地位，并就如何在世界背景下思考中国问题、思考美国的对华政策等发表了见解。

　　欧文·拉铁摩尔（1900—1989），汉学家、历史学家、地理学家，在中国度过童年和青年时代，多次在中国各地游历，曾担任哈佛燕京社研究员、约翰·霍普金斯大学教授、利兹大学教授，曾于1937年访问延安，1972年应周恩来总理邀请再度访华。他主张以平等客观的态度看待中国，在美国是与费正清等齐名的“中国通”学者。他破除“华夷”之见，一视同仁地看待长城内外的中国历史，其学术研究成果具有深远的影响。

About the author

Owen Lattimore (1900-1989) was a Sinologist, historian, and geographer who spent his childhood and youth in China and traveled extensively throughout the country, serving as a fellow of the Harvard-Yenching Society, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, and a professor at the University of Leeds. He visited Yan 'an in 1937 and visited China again in 1972 at the invitation of Premier Zhou Enlai. He advocates an equal and objective attitude towards China, and is known as a "China expert" in the United States as well as Fairbank and other scholars. He broke away from the view of "Hua Yi" and treated the Chinese history inside and outside the Great Wall equally, and his academic research results have far-reaching influence.
