西晋末年，五胡入华，在持续七十年的纷乱局势中，鲜卑拓跋氏脱颖而出，创立北魏王朝。作者由此入手，论述拓跋氏如何建立核心集团与核心区以作为统治基础。但北魏后期政治中心与军事中心的分离，引发六镇之乱，东、西魏分立。在此背景下，作者进而探讨东、西势力对河东地区的争夺和当地大族的动向，以及西魏施行的府兵制度与其中央辐射设计之匠心。随后，作者将视线移至同一时期的南方，论述东晋南朝军权的转移及其对政局的影响。
北齐覆亡后，核心区被“关中本位”取代，核心集团则衍生出“关陇集团”，成为隋唐统治阶层的主干。但随着府兵制度的废弛与安史之乱的爆发，唐代中后期藩镇林立。本书选取其中对地缘政治影响巨大的藩镇魏博，讲述其二百年兴衰跌宕，阐论国家重心的东移与职业军人的主导地位，并由此出发，考察五代时期的政治生态，凝结成一部异彩纷呈的中古门阀消亡史。
作者简介
毛汉光，1937年生于浙江省江山县。曾任哈佛燕京学社访问学者、美国伯克利加州大学东亚图书馆访问学者、西安碑林博物馆客座研究员。著有《两晋南北朝士族政治之研究》《唐代统治阶层社会变动》《中国中古社会史论》《中国中古政治史论》《唐代墓志铭汇编附考》等。

At the end of the Western Jin Dynasty, the Five Hu entered China, and in the chaotic situation that lasted for seventy years, the Tuoba family of Xianbei stood out and founded the Northern Wei Dynasty. Starting from this, the author discusses how Tuoba family established the core group and core area as the foundation of rule. However, the separation of the political center and the military center in the later period of the Northern Wei led to the chaos of the six towns and the separation of the Eastern and Western Wei. In this context, the author further discusses the competition of eastern and western forces for Hedong area and the trend of local big families, as well as the implementation of the Western Wei government soldiers system and its central radiation design. Then, the author moves his eyes to the south of the same period and discusses the transfer of military power in the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties and its influence on the political situation.
After the fall of the Northern Qi Dynasty, the core area was replaced by "Guanzhong standard", and the core group derived "Guanlong Group", which became the backbone of the Sui and Tang ruling classes. However, with the abolition of the military system and the outbreak of An Shi Rebellion, the middle and late Tang Dynasty vassals were numerous. This book selects Wei Bo, which has a huge influence on geopolitics, to tell about its rise and fall in the past 200 years, explain the eastward shift of the national center of gravity and the dominant position of professional soldiers, and from this, to investigate the political ecology of the five dynasties, and to form a colorful history of the demise of the middle ages.
About the author
He was a visiting scholar at the Harvard-Yenching Institute, a visiting scholar at the East Asian Library at the University of California, Berkeley, and a visiting researcher at Xi 'an Beilin Museum. He is the author of "A Study on the Politics of the Nobles in the Two Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties", "The Social Change of the Ruling Class in the Tang Dynasty", "The History of Chinese Medieval Society", "The History of Chinese Medieval Politics", and "A Compilation of Epitaphs in the Tang Dynasty."
