本书辑录了红学名家周汝昌先生与著名作家刘心武先生于1991年至2011年间的往来信件，其中的主要内容是两人关于曹雪芹《石头记》（即《红楼梦》）20年间的讨论和交流，展现了他们在红学研究方面的心路轨迹及专注热忱的治学精神，同时彰显了二人深厚的忘年友情。书中还收集了两人信中提及的同时期文章、资料等。
周汝昌（1918—2012），中国著名红学家、古典文学研究家、诗人、书法家，是继胡适等诸先生之后新中国红学研究第一人，考证派主力和集大成者。其红学代表作《红楼梦新证》是红学史上一部具有开创和划时代意义的重要著作，奠定了现当代红学研究的坚实基础。另在诗词、书法等领域所下功夫甚深，贡献突出，曾编订与撰写了多部专著。
刘心武，1942年生，中国当代著名作家、红学研究家。曾任中学教师、出版社编辑、《人民文学》主编。其作品以关注现实为特征，以《班主任》而闻名文坛，长篇小说《钟鼓楼》曾获第二届茅盾文学奖。20世纪90年代后，成为《红楼梦》的积极研究者，曾在中央电视台《百家讲坛》栏目进行系列讲座，对红学在民间的普及与发展起到促进作用。2014年推出长篇小说《飘窗》，2020年推出长篇小说《邮轮碎片》。

This book is a collection of letters between Mr. Zhou Ruchang, a famous scholar of redology, and Mr. Liu Xinwu, a famous writer, from 1991 to 2011. The main content of this book is their discussions and exchanges on Cao Xueqin's Stone (A Dream of Red Mansions) over the past 20 years, showing their hearts and minds in redology research and their dedicated and enthusiastic spirit. At the same time, it shows the profound friendship between the two people. The book also collects articles and materials from the same period that the two men mentioned in their letters.
Zhou Ruchang (1918-2012), a famous Chinese redologist, classical literature researcher, poet and calligrapher, was the first person to study redology in New China after Hu Shi and other scholars, and the main force and masterpiece of textual criticism. His representative work of redology, The New Certificate of a Dream of Red Mansions, is an important work of pioneering and epoch-making significance in the history of redology and has laid a solid foundation for modern and contemporary redology research. In addition, he has made great efforts in the fields of poetry and calligraphy and made outstanding contributions. He has edited and written many monographs.
Liu Xinwu, born in 1942, is a famous contemporary Chinese writer and researcher of redology. He was a middle school teacher, a publishing house editor, and the chief editor of People's Literature. His works are characterized by his attention to reality. He is famous in the literary world for his "Class Teacher". His novel "Bell and Drum Tower" won the second MAO Dun Literature Prize. After the 1990s, he became an active researcher of "A Dream of Red Mansions" and gave a series of lectures in the "Lecture Room" column of CCTV, which played a role in promoting the popularization and development of redology among the people. In 2014, the novel "Bay Window" was released, and in 2020, the novel "Pieces of the Cruise Ship" was released.
