"Baby on the Fire Escape" is a meditation on the relationship between motherhood and artistic achievement, offering insights into some of the most pressing conflicts of contemporary life.
Ursula Le Guen found productive stability in family life, and Audre Lord raised children on his own terms. Susan Sontag and Angela Carter became mothers at 19 and 43, respectively. These mothers had one child, or five, or seven. They work in the studio, in the kitchen, in the car, in the bed, at the desk, with the stroller beside them. With strong empathy, the author lets us see the various private struggles of these outstanding artists and writers of the 20th century. They were criticised for pursuing creative work - Doris Lessing was accused of abandoning her children, Alice Neel was accused by her in-laws of finishing a painting and leaving her children on the fire escape of their New York apartment. Weaving together these vivid portraits of pioneering women, Phillips suggests that creative motherhood is a problem that puts babies on the rumored fire escape: work and care are in a constantly negotiated, temporary, productive tension.
