In 1839, a Japanese woman named Ofano fled her hometown and walked from the countryside to the capital, Edo. This year she was 35, divorced three times, and her family was anxious to marry her off again, to whomever.
In Edo, life was much harder than in the countryside, and Ono lived in a three-stack room without even a change of coat. As a foreigner, her life is as fragile as duckweed, fire, famine, shogunate reform... Anything that happens to her could ruin her hard-won new life.
Everyone in his hometown hopes that often wild admit defeat and go home, but she did not.

Amy Stanley is a professor of history at Northwestern University. Her research interests include modern Japanese history, urban history, and gender history. She is a 2023 recipient of the Guggenheim Prize.
She came across a letter that he wrote to his mother in Edo. Since then, she has spent a decade flying from the United States to Japan, retracing through hundreds of letters and countless archives the difficult but tenacious life of a 19th-century Japanese rural woman.
