Content introduction

Chips are a scarce resource on which the modern world depends, just like oil. Today, military, economic, and geopolitical power is built on chips. From guided missiles to microwave ovens, from smartphones to the stock market, everything depends on chips. Whoever maintains a leading position in the field of chip design and manufacturing can generate a huge advantage in technology and economics. For a long time, the United States, Japan, South Korea and European countries have been engaged in fierce competition in the field of chip design and manufacturing in order to win the war based on technology.

Economic historian Chris Miller gives a fuller account of the decades-long struggle for control of chip technology, explains the pivotal role semiconductors play in modern life, and how the United States came to dominate chip design and manufacturing, applying the technology to military systems.

A combination of technological adventures, business battles, and great power games, this book analyzes the history of the rise of the chip and the increasingly complex geopolitical power struggles to control the future of the chip industry, which are crucial to understanding today's politics, economics, and technology.

About the author

Chris Miller is an associate professor of international history at the Fletcher School at Tufts University, a Jeane Kirkpatrick Visiting Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, director of Eurasia at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, and director of Greenment, a macroeconomic and geopolitical consulting firm. The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and other media staff writer. He holds a doctorate in history from Yale University and a bachelor's degree in history from Harvard University.

Wonderful book review

Chris Miller's "Chip War" is very wonderful, there are scientific and technological adventure, there are business war stories, but also the great power game, which is very popular in the world. But we Chinese readers will have more mixed emotions when we read this book, and should have more important gains.

-- Wan Weigang Science writer

Chris Miller's "Chip Wars" is beautifully written and fascinating, telling the history of the development of chips and the history of competition in a story-telling way, showing the fierce competition and undercurrent behind technological innovation, which is worth recommending.

-- Guo Yiwu, Secretary-General of Shanghai Integrated Circuit Industry Association

This is a rare book on industry, economy and strategy. This book gives us a glimpse into the real thinking of American experts and even the US government, entrepreneurs and think tanks, and is a good reading for everyone to understand and think about the current chip situation.

-- Feng Jinfeng well-known semiconductor industry expert

"Chip Wars" provides an important sample analysis for the history of globalization, and also provides multi-dimensional thinking for the conflict-riddled future of the world.

-- Wu Chen, Editor-in-Chief of The Economist Business Review

It is a remarkable masterpiece, a fascinating and ingenious combination of economic, technical and strategic analysis.

-- Paul Kennedy, British historian

The future of humanity depends on a "chip war" between two ecosystems in the US and China vying to design and build the world's advanced microprocessors. As competition between China and the United States intensifies, this book provides just the historical perspective we need. This is an indispensable book.

-- Niall Ferguson, British historian

If you care about technology, the country's future prosperity, or continued security, then this is a book you have to read.

-- Lawrence H. Summers, former Secretary of the Treasury
