Content introduction

From ferns in 19th century English living rooms, to the flowering evergreens in Alvar Aalto's Helsinki home in the 1930s, to the Wall of life in a fashion shop on Regent Street in London, plants and flowers have played a complex and important role in our private and public interior Spaces over the past two centuries. While international architecture and interior design styles continue to evolve with the popularity of various plant varieties, our need to incorporate nature into our interiors has remained constant.

Presenting the latest research in the field of interior design, set against a backdrop of compelling archival photographs and lush contemporary interiors, Penny Spark reinterprets the story of modern architecture and interior design through a unique perspective on the role of plants in the human environment.

As the first book to cover the long history of houseplants from the 18th century to the present day, I found it to be a rich and deep exploration of our need to bring nature indoors to enrich our lives. In fact, COVID-19 has made us realize the importance of surrounding ourselves with beautiful, lush plants and fresh air! Hopefully, this book will awaken our hearts as the author intended, and a well-tended indoor garden will subtly bring joy to our lives every day. By extension, let us be more grateful for the wonders of nature.
