This book explores the new ideas that a new generation of digital technologies brings to the fundamental foundations of identity, governance, trust, and social organization. The fifteen essays in this book map out a new future for these foundations: open web standards and data sharing, a society of decentralized autonomous organizations, a world of trusted digital currencies, and spontaneous, expressive communities like Burning Man.

The authors include Alex "Sandy" Bentland of the M.I.T. Human Dynamics Lab and former FCC Chairman Reid Bentland. E. Hunt; Owen Uladowsky-Berger, a longtime IBM strategist; Bernat Ritter, an expert on monetary systems; journalist Jonathan Lehjard; and Maurizio Rossi, one of the founders of H-Farm.

The articles in this book reflect the views of ID3 (The Institute for Institutional Innovation by Data-Driven Design). ID3 is a nonprofit organization based in Boston that conducts research in partnership with M.I.T. Media Lab. The institute was founded by Dr. John H. Clippinger and M.I.T. Professor Alex "Sandy" Bentland. ID3 has developed a new Open source platform, Open Mustard SEED (OMS), which gives users real control over their identity and personal data, as well as ways to design their own currencies and institutions. People are able to collect and share personal information in a secure, transparent and responsible manner, enabling reliable and trustworthy social and economic relationships to flourish.

About the author

Dr. John H. Clippinger:

Founder and Executive Chairman of ID3, Research Scientist in the Human Dynamics Group at the M.I.T. Media Lab. He is a serial entrepreneur, a technology innovator, and co-director of the Law Lab at Harvard University's Berkman Center for Internet and Society. He is the author of A Bunch of Ones: The Future of Individual Identity (2007) and Business Biology (1998).

David Bollier:

ID3 editor, writer, blogger and independent scholar, activist. One of the founders of the Public Response Group. He is the author of twelve books, the most recent of which is Think Like a Normal Person (2014).
