Guy wrote more than 25 books in his lifetime, which were widely and profoundly influential and established him as a pivotal figure among contemporary historians. Its topics cover many social and cultural history fields such as the Enlightenment and the middle class. In addition, he was a practitioner of psychoanalytic history, known for his advocacy of "cultural history using psychoanalytic methods."
