In April 1959, after returning from a business trip to the city of Hermosillo, Mexican newspaper magnate Artemio collapsed in his office. When he woke up again, he found himself lying in a sick bed in his mansion waiting to die. Memories of his undignified life and his decaying body are all he has left. The sick wife and daughter do not care about his death, just want to get the will. In a dazed state, Artemio allows his mind to travel between the present and the past, sinking into imagination and nightmares, as important moments in his life come to mind.
In 1919, Artemio, a young veteran of the Mexican Revolution, came to the Puebla home of his comrade Gonzalo Bernal, tricked Gonzalo's father into trusting him with lies, married Gonzalo's sister, and stole Gonzalo's property. Since then, he has annexed the land of the landowners in Puebla, been elected to parliament through secret operations, and destroyed business competitors by dirty means, gradually accumulating huge wealth and reaching the top of his life. The novel ends in 1903, where Artemio's life began. His mother, Isabel Cross, a mulatto, gave birth to him after being raped by her family, Anatasio Menchaga, who then kicked him out. Uncle Lunero secretly raised him. In order to change his fate, he joined the Mexican Revolution and later betrayed his ideals.
The novel The Death of Artemio Kroes, first published in 1962, is one of the most famous masterpieces of Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes and is regarded as a milestone in the "explosion of Latin American literature". The novel shows the complexity of human nature and nationality through the multi-voice narrative structure.

In 1977, he won the Romulo Gallegos International Fiction Prize, the most prestigious literary award in Spanish-speaking America. In 1987, he was awarded the Cervantes Literature Prize, known as the Nobel Prize for Literature in the Spanish-speaking world. In 1994, he was awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize, a prestigious Spanish literary award.
