Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature, the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, and the National Humanities Medal. A prolific novelist and screenwriter, he wrote more than 30 novels, screenplays and screenplays in his lifetime.
The Lone Dove won the Pulitzer Prize in 1986, the film adaptations of his works have been nominated for 34 Academy Awards (13 wins), and the film Brokeback Mountain, written by him and Diana Osanna and based on Anne Prue, won the Best Adapted Screenplay Award at the 78th Academy Awards in 2006.
He is considered one of the main spokesmen of American Western fiction. Unlike most writers' romanticized treatment of the West, his work focused more realistically on events and characters, and was praised by critics as "a new look at the history of the American West." Reflecting on real and complex human nature in stories with twists and turns, his works are both literary and artistic, redefining the American Western novel. He also called himself "a critic of the cowboy myth."
