Nineteenth-century Philosophy: From Kant to Nietzsche
With the development of the European Enlightenment, the outbreak of the American Revolution and the French Revolution, and the improvement of the commercialization and industrialization of the living environment, the philosophical thinking of the 19th century began to explore the difficult situation of the modern individual between individuality and socialization, and to critically examine the advantages and disadvantages of modernity. This book focuses on 13 important philosophers of the 19th century. From Kant and German idealism (Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel), to their critical successors (Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, and Feuerbach), to the five resisters of modern society (Marx, Tocqueville, Thoreau, Comte, Mill), and finally to the substitution of Nietzschean thought for modern thought.
About the author:
Gunter Zeller, professor of philosophy at the University of Munich, Germany, is an internationally renowned scholar of Kant and Fichte. He was the chief editor of the Complete Works of Fichte of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and the editor of the Works of Kant of the Brandenburg Academy of Sciences in Berlin. He has written and edited more than 30 works.
