"Gladiator" tells the origin, rise and fall of gladiator competition from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD, showing its interweaving with the political scene and historical fate of Rome. Gladiatorial fights originated as gladiatorial performances at funerals, and gradually became large public entertainment events held in arenas. The "bread and circuses" strategy, carried over from Caesar, made gladiatorial performances a way for emperors to demonstrate their power and reward the masses. But in the midst of the emperor's lethality, the people's enjoyment and the empire's troubles, Christianity filled the spiritual void of the people.
