《自由的技术》内容简介：
从印刷出版到电子通信，人们为捍卫自由交流的权利斗争了近五百年。然而，凝结在美国宪法第一修正案中的对公民言论和出版自由的法律豁免，并未被新的通信媒介所承继——在电子媒介中，政府企图不遗余力地行使它的权威，进而模糊个人自由与国家权力的界线。电子通信技术相关利益集团、技术监管部门与美国宪法第一修正案之间的冲突与对抗不断上演，在不断发展变化的技术环境中争取个人自由的斗争也从未止息。
作者简介
伊锡尔·德·索拉·普尔（Ithiel de Sola Pool），20世纪著名的政治科学家、传播学专家，曾任美国国家科学院院士，多次出任美国和其他国家政府顾问。1952年于芝加哥大学取得博士学位，随后先后任教于斯坦福大学和麻省理工学院，参与创办麻省理工学院国际研究中心及政治科学系。普尔的研究成果几乎涉及了政治科学的各个分支，他在传播技术对全球政治、社会通信及大众文化的影响领域的研究牢牢树立了其学术声誉，代表作有：《传播学手册》（The Handbook of Communication，编著，1973）、《电话的社会影响》（The Social Impact of the Telephone，编著，1976）、《自由的技术》（Technologies of Freedom，1983）等。

From print to electronic communications, people have fought for the right to communicate freely for nearly five hundred years. However, the legal exemptions to freedom of speech and of the press enshrined in the First Amendment of the United States Constitution have not been carried over to the new media of communication, in which the government seeks to exert its authority to blur the line between individual liberty and state power. Conflicts and confrontations between interest groups involved in electronic communications technology, technology regulators, and the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution continue to play out, and the struggle for personal freedom in the ever-changing technological environment never ends.
About the author
Ithiel de Sola Pool was a 20th century political scientist and communications expert who was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and an adviser to the United States and other governments. He received his doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1952, and later taught at Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he co-founded the MIT Center for International Studies and the Department of Political Science. Poole's work spans almost every branch of political science, and he has established a strong academic reputation for his research on the impact of communication technologies on global politics, social communication, and popular culture, including: The Handbook of Communication (1973), The Social Impact of the Telephone (1973) (1976), "Technologies of Freedom" (1983), etc.
About the Translator
Hu Yong, a professor at the School of Journalism and Communication at Peking University with a doctorate in political science, is one of the earliest scholars engaged in the study of Internet and new media in China. He is the author of "The Noise", "Post-Human Post-Truth", "Media: Return and Innovation", "The Misdirection of the Global Open Internet", and has translated "Digital Survival", "The Age of Everyone" and "The Boundary of Knowledge".
Liu Chunyi is a PhD candidate at the School of Journalism and Communication, Peking University.
