本书收录了宋史研究专家王瑞来先生的旧刊新作，共12篇，都围绕着一个主题展开，即士大夫政治与皇权，内容涵盖两宋。诚如书名《宋代的皇帝、文臣和武将》所示，皇帝写了宋朝开国的太祖、太宗，对堪称千古之谜的“烛影斧声”事件也有专题考察；文臣写了士大夫的楷模范仲淹、“铁面御史”赵抃、“太平宰相”周必大；武将写了在幕后促成“澶渊之盟”的宋朝降将王继忠和抗金名将岳飞；末了的一篇则写了以《富春山居图》闻名的由宋入元的文人画家黄公望，论旨已进入宋元变革论的视域。可以说，本书对宋代历史上的不少重大事件都有论列。
向来的历史研究，大多对史事进行严密的逻辑演绎，从中归纳出历史演进的必然性。这样的研究高屋建瓴，无疑对历史发展的总体把握具有重要意义。然而，高度抽象后的历史，失去了血肉，只剩下骨骼，让人难以感受到像时下的生活那样鲜活。为了避免“载之空言”，全书十二篇，宏大叙事皆依托于具体历史人物，以人物论的形式展开。有了人的活动，历史才生动，其间的喜怒哀乐，才会唤起今人的共鸣。本书虽为学术文章，但文笔通俗易读，容易获得更为广泛的受众。
