早稻田大学文学部毕业。大学期间开始学习瑜伽，从瑜伽的修行哲学“断行、舍行、离行”中提炼出“断舍离”的思维方式并用于日常生活的“整理”，逐渐建立起任何人都能做到的“自我探查法”。“断舍离”也是刺激思维新陈代谢的思路转化法。现在，在日本本土和世界其他国家和地区，不论年龄、性别、职业，规模庞大的支持者们都在自发倡导“断舍离”。
从首次出版的《断舍离》面世以来，山下英子独著、主编的众多“断舍离”相关图书也在亚洲、欧洲各国出版，成为现象级畅销书。现在，除了书籍出版，她还通过互联网、报纸、杂志、电视、广播等各种媒体全力发展断舍离事业。
