Content introduction
This book is the work of American sociologist Steven Seidman, which combs sociological theory from the inception of sociology to the early 21st century. In addition to clearly and explicitly summarizing the doctrines of each social theorist and school of social theory, the author also reviews each theory in the context of the social environment and background at the time of writing, adding the moral dimension to social theory, and relativizing various commitments, concepts and knowledge of sociology, in an attempt to bring social theory into the discussion of public life. Engage in ongoing dialogue and conflict about the present and future face of the social world. As the author says in the preface, "The primary value of the difference that knowledge can make in our lives lies in the types of lives that knowledge can imagine and help to create." It is this hope that has guided sociology and modern social theory for about two hundred years. It is this hope that inspires this book."
