Content introduction
The author is an outstanding young and middle-aged scholar who is very active in the forefront of calligraphy history research in recent years, and has written many influential research monographs. It made a breakthrough in the use of documents and images, especially in the arrangement and application of Qing correspondence and tablet inscriptions.
This book explores the inner vein of the history of calligraphy, and has unique insight, which is quite refreshing and enlightening for the current study of the history of tablet science and ancient calligraphy in the Qing Dynasty.
The title of the book is taken from the late Qing Dynasty litmus scientist Ye Changchi, "there are books outside the two Kings, and can be discussed with the book", which is regarded as a landmark declaration of "stele" and "post study". Through a reflective study of the history of stelology, the author deeply combs the context, purport and practice of "stelology" in Qing Dynasty.
Since the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, with the rise of gemology, the stone script (Ming stone script) from Han Li to regular script has been regarded as a new resource for the study of ancient calligraphy, and has entered the vision of scholars, calligraphers and other cultural elites, and even become classics. Under the noise of Bao Shichen and Kang Youwei, "Stele" was used to refer to the study of stone inscriptions in a general way, which became more and more popular and was opposed to "book study". The meaning of "stele" involves the evolution of calligraphy style, the differences and similarities of calligraphy concepts and tastes, etc., which have been debated for a long time.
The author describes the calligraphic activities of the representative figures by means of narration and discussion, and reveals the important details in the formation process of "epigraphy", which deepens our thinking of epigraphy as a historical phenomenon.
