Content introduction

Understanding the senses is essential to understanding the Middle Ages, because the theoretical exploration and practical use of the senses played a crucial role in the development of the intellectual framework and cultural practice of this period. In the long medieval millennium, the senses were not considered the same as they are today: speech, for example, was considered one of the senses of the mouth; Sight and hearing are not always the primary senses; For the medical community, taste is more decisive... The senses are also not just passive organs of feeling, they are believed to play an active role in the perception process and are also important factors in the formation of each person's moral identity.

From the senses in the concrete city or marketplace to the senses in medicine, science and even philosophy, from the senses as symbols of social status to the senses used in academic analysis, this book reveals the many interpretations of the senses in the Middle Ages and reveals the importance of sensory experience.

Richard G.Newhauser

Professor of English and Medieval Studies at Arizona State University, where his research focuses on moral traditions and the history of the senses. His books include: The Early History of Greed (2000; Republished in 2006); Sin:Essays on the Moral Tradition in the Western Middle Ages (2007); (Co-eds.) Sin in Medieval and Early Modern Culture (2012) et al.

Qian Wenyi is an art history scholar and translator. He studied at University College London, UK, where he received a Bachelor's degree in Art History and Materials Studies (2014) and a Master's degree in Art History (2015). Since 2019, he has been conducting doctoral training and research in the Department of Art History at the University of Toronto, focusing on artistic practice, material culture and artisan groups in early modern Europe, as well as on the ideological interaction and translation politics between East Asia, Europe and the United States in the 20th century. She helped curate exhibitions in the European Art Department of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and in 2016-2017 worked for the OCAT Research Center's Public Programs Department, planning and organizing the annual lecture series of the same year. She has published academic research and art criticism in both Chinese and English in domestic and foreign journals, and has translated the Art History of Space (Chinese translation to English), The Birth of "Painting" : Meta-Painting in Early Modern Europe (French translation, i.e. out), and the History of Sensory Culture in the Middle Ages.
