Risk Society is a classic work by Ulrich Beck, a famous German sociologist, and an outstanding representative work of postmodern sociological theory. As the author points out, modernization in the 19th century dismantled the hierarchical agrarian society and created a structural picture of industrial society; Today's modernization is the elimination of the contours of industrial society, and in the continuity of modernity, another social form is taking shape. In this social formation, unknown, unintended consequences become the dominant force of history and society, and it puts all life forms on this planet in danger.

The book diagnoses current modernity as a "risk society," whose main feature is that human beings face existential risks, which are created by industrial society. We live in a society rife with organized irresponsibility, and what is particularly disturbing is that the makers of risk protect their own interests at the expense of the risk-takers. Baker believes that the dominant economic, legal and political systems in western societies are not only involved in the creation of risks, but also participate in the cover-up of the truth of risks. Beck advocates reflexive modernization, which is characterized by not only perceiving the dilemma of reason in modernity, but also trying to cure this dilemma with the spirit of reason.

About the author

Ulrich Beck (1944-2015) was a German sociologist who was professor of sociology at the University of Munich and taught at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and at the Fondation La Humanite (FMSH) in Paris. Baker is the main proposer and founder of the "risk society" theory, and together with British sociologists Anthony Giddens and Scott Rush put forward the concept of "second modernity", trying to open up a "third way" between modernity and post-modernity. Baker's main academic interest lies in the transformation of modern society. His professional fields include political sociology, scientific sociology, technological sociology and environmental sociology, and he has proposed several important concepts such as risk society, second modernity, reflexive modernization and cosmopolitanism. His famous works include: The Risk Society (1986), Anti-Poison (1991), Ecological Enlightenment (1992), Ecological Politics in the Age of Risk (1994), What Is Globalization?
