Content introduction

Focus on the biggest ideological terror in modern Japan

Breaking a century-long silence and illuminating a dark chapter lost in history

Fifty-ninth Japan Essayist's Club Award winner

With the anarchist Miyashita Taiji to make a bomb as the beginning, Xingde Qiushui and other 26 people were accused of attempting to assassinate the emperor, to "treason" delivered to the court. The Special Criminal Division of the Grand Court of Appeal held a closed trial without calling any witnesses, and after only about three weeks, on January 18, 1911, it issued a verdict, sentencing 24 people to death for "grand treason" and two others to imprisonment for violating the Regulations on the Punishment of Explosives Control. Only about a week after the verdict, Qiushui and 12 others who were sentenced to death were hanged respectively, and the other 12 were commuted to life imprisonment. It is known as the "Great Reverse Event". Postwar studies have shown that this was a state crime in which the ideas of individuals - liberty, equality, fraternity - were tried as crimes and the freedom of the mind was stifled by a structured crime.

The author of this book, Nobuhiro Tanaka, has been on a journey to visit the families and surroundings of the "Great Reverse Event" since around 1979. Those who were forcibly conjoined, although their degrees and ideas were different, were all minorities in the society at that time. They oppose war, advocate not exploiting the way of life of others, care for those who suffer discrimination as religious people, think about how to achieve an equal and free society, and how to deal with the relationship between the state, the emperor and the individual, which is an issue that every living individual cannot avoid. They are people who live in trouble, conflict, and sometimes impatience. These problems, which they discovered under the influence of ideas such as socialism and anarchism, are the subject of literature and thought of the time, the subject of the media of the time, and the problem of today.

The family, the nation, and the world are the aggregation of individuals. As long as individuals have the spirit of independence and freedom, and the sincerity and practice of helping the weak and caring for their neighbors, all people can live a successful community life. Therefore, we human beings must always exert the spirit of independence, autonomy and mutual assistance, and wage a desperate struggle against those who oppose this spirit.

-- Uchiyama Yutong (a monk of the Cao Dong Sect and a victim of the "Great Rebellion")
