【美】索尔·贝娄（Saul Bellow，1915.6.10—2005.4.5）
1976年诺贝尔文学奖得主，曾获普利策奖、美国国家艺术勋章，三次斩获美国国家图书奖。他用文学思考重要的问题，意图“在现代思想的废墟下重新发现世界的神奇”。
贝娄是文学大家，也是20世纪重要的知识分子。他出生于加拿大魁北克的犹太移民家庭，少时就在俄语、法语、英语、意第绪语和希伯来语等多语种环境下长大，九岁时举家迁往美国。他于芝加哥大学攻读人类学，后转入西北大学。长期于芝加哥大学、波士顿大学等高等学府执教。1998年，成为美国文理科学院院士。

About the author
Saul Bellow (June 10, 1915.5-May. 2005)
Winner of the 1976 Nobel Prize in Literature, he has won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Medal of Arts, and three National Book Awards. He used literature to ponder important questions, intending to "rediscover the wonder of the world beneath the ruins of modern thought."
Bellow is a literary master and an important intellectual in the 20th century. Born to Jewish immigrants in Quebec, Canada, he grew up speaking Russian, French, English, Yiddish, and Hebrew before moving to the United States at the age of nine. He studied anthropology at the University of Chicago before transferring to Northwestern University. He has been teaching at universities such as the University of Chicago and Boston University. In 1998, he became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Herzog is Saul Bellow's most important work, considered to be on a par with Joyce's Ulysses, and was immediately hailed as a literary masterpiece upon publication in 1964, winning the author the 1965 National Book Award. The book was popular with readers because it touched a level of empathy that many people were unaware of, depicted a universal human predicament, and thousands of readers wrote to claim that the novel was about their own experiences.
