Le roman modes d 'Emploi (Description of the Use of Fiction) is a history of 20th century French fiction written by Henri Godard, a famous contemporary French literary critic, first published in 2006. The French novel has undergone a very special process of change in the 20th century. Before that, novels tended to tell their stories in chronological order, arrange their plots according to the laws of cause and effect, and strive to create the illusion of literary imitation of reality, principles that formed the basis of the most important European novels of the 19th century in particular. Beginning in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, novelists such as Woolf and Joyce began to challenge this tradition. In France, this challenge is relevant to several novelists in each generation of the 20th century. When we look back at this history, we will find that by exploring the opposite of imitation fiction, these novelists also constructed a real trend of development. This trend has its own development logic, development process and development progress, of which the 1920s and 1950s are its two accelerated development periods. Although the works in this trend have different characteristics, they also show some important commonality, that is, they have distanced themselves from the traditional imitation novels with character creation and story narration as the core. Henry Godard's Instructions for the Use of Fiction focuses on such an innovative critical trend. This book consists of 14 chapters, which introduces the French novelists and their masterpieces through various forms of innovation in chronological order, clearly presents an anti-traditional path of the French novel in the first 75 years of the 20th century, and analyzes the characteristics of each stage of development of this path. Through this analysis, Henry Godard reveals the various possibilities of novel creation.
