本书是一本动物史、社会文化史研究专著，主要研究日本第一座现代动物园——成立于1882年的东京上野动物园，在日本快速近代化、帝国崛起和陨落的历史背景下，叙述这座动物园从明治维新时期到当代的历史，讲述这座动物园发挥的具体功能和作用。本书认为，这是第一座有别于西方世界的各种影响而独立建设成立的动物园，不仅是日本东京的著名观光景点，还具有丰富的文化内涵和象征意义，一方面从独特的角度体现了日本自明治时期以来政治、经济、社会、文化等多方面的剧变，另一方面反思了人类与动物、人类与自然的互动关系。

Introduction of works
This book is a research monograph of animal history, social and cultural history, mainly studying the first modern zoo in Japan, the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, which was established in 1882. In the historical background of Japan's rapid modernization, the rise and fall of the empire, it narrates the history of this zoo from the Meiji Restoration period to the present day, and tells the specific functions and roles played by this zoo. This book believes that this is the first zoo that is independent from the various influences of the Western world. It is not only a famous tourist attraction in Tokyo, Japan, but also has rich cultural connotation and symbolic significance. On the one hand, it reflects the political, economic, social, cultural and other drastic changes in Japan since the Meiji period from a unique perspective. On the other hand, it reflects the interaction between human and animal, human and nature.
Ian J. Miller is Professor of History and co-chair of the Department of History of Science and the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University. His research interests include the history of Japan, especially the cultural history of science, technology, and environmental change. He is the co-author of Japan on the Edge of Nature.
